The echocardiogram is one of the most frequently used techniques for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. It is non-invasive and painless. The echocardiogram is so versatile with clinical applications in the entire spectrum of cardiovascular disease, that it is now considered an extension of the physical examination.
The echocardiogram should be used as a “definitive” rather than a “screening” diagnostic tool. At Manhattan CardioVascular Diagnostics we use several different types of the echocardiogram tests such as 2-D/M-Mode Doppler, and Color Flow.
The 2-D/M-Mode Doppler technique provides us with information about the cardiac chamber size, wall thickness, global and regional systolic function, valvular and vascular structures and for measuring cross sectional dimensions of the walls and chambers of the heart. With this information we can also estimate chamber volumes and left ventricular mass. The Color Flow Doppler allows us to evaluate valves for regurgitation and stenosis, detect the presence of intracardiac shunts, and shows us imaging blood flow in the heart.
